Tuesday nights are training nights. Police officers and other law enforcement-related personnel volunteer their time to give our police explorers top-notch training in all aspects of law enforcement. Additionally, we train with other area police explorer posts. The Northeast Regional Law Enforcement Association organizes monthly training in preparation for Stations Day. These trainings take place at alternating police departments. Our training prepares us for events such as Stations Day, attendance at the Connecticut Explorer Police Academy and the National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference.
STATIONS DAY is organized by the Northeast Regional Law Enforcement Exploring Association and held at the Connecticut Police Academy in Meriden, Connecticut. It is a great opportunity for explorers from all over northeast to get together, practice their skills, and have a great time. It is a training day filled with friendly competition. The scenarios are run by certified police officers, using other officers and civilians as role players to real-to-life situations for which the explorers must handle as if they themselves were police officers. EXPORER POLICE ACADEMY is a week-long, annual event designed to give police explorers a little bit of an idea of what attending the police academy is like. The academy is run by advisors who are certified police officers with the help of other dedicated civilian adults. The academy is held on the Eastern Connecticut State University campus during the last week of July. Explorers get up early, practice drills and physical fitness, attend training classes, and enjoy a variety of activities in the evening. Explorers attending for the third year have the opportunity to work for a mock police department 24/7, responding to a number of calls directed by police officers. Explorers are expected to be disciplined and responsible. Push-ups and other sentences are handed down for various indiscretions. The most dreaded part of academy is the nightly room inspection. After attending academy, explorers should never again have a messy room!
National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference takes place every two years. The 2006 conference took place in Flagstaff, Arizona and the 2008 conference will take place in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Our post has attended every National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference since 2002. Not only do explorers get to meet other teens from around the World, but we take advantage of the other sites and activities the area has to offer; such as the Grand Canyon and Indian reservations in Arizona, and Six Flags in Georgia. Like Stations Day, the conference is an excellent training opportunity partnered with friendly competitions. The accommodations are on a college campus and as with the Explorer Police Academy, the evenings offer a variety of activities. |
